Yisrael Hayom

TBS announces a new adult education class, "Yisrael Hayom," taught by Benjamin Margalit, meeting weekly on alternating Tuesday and Wednesday evenings (see schedule).

The discussions are free and open to the public. Please bring your family and friends. No Hebrew knowledge is required.

This year’s material for our discussions is going to be drawn mainly from two sources:

1- Dr. Rivka Shpak-Lissak ... "Rivka Shpak Lissak was born in Israel when it was under British occupation. She has a second degree in Jewish history, and a PhD in American history..." Please visit Dr. Lissak’s website: http://rslissak.com In it you will find many of the articles we discussed last year -- plus new material as the site gets updated regularly.

We will begin the "discussion-year" in the deep-end, focusing on Jewish/Islam relations. (I will forward you the material in due course.)

2- "Yisrael Hayom" Current affairs -- RSS taken from Front-pages of Hebrew newspapers of the actual day our discussion takes place.

I have been following Debka File < http://www.debka.com/ > for its accuracy in reporting Intelligence - behind the scenes, and its Right-of-Center general opinion.

"Yisrael Hayom" does not need to be about History, Religion, politics, or the Palestinians. I will encourage you to bring to the table anything that you’ve dug out the preceding week about Art, Entertainment, Culture, Business, Green stuff, Sports and Etc.

Talking about the table - "Yisrael Hayom" can (and should) also be about Israeli food. Once a month (or second month) each participant will google an Israeli recipe -- Make/bake/cook/broil/boil/beg/borrow/steal and bring it in to the kitchen at TBS to share with the rest of us. It has to be Homemade... by you! Nothing comes close to Food and Politics, or food and Macabi-Haifa winning the European Basketball championship.

It should be serious-learning-fun!

For any questions, please contact margalitstudio@windstream.net.

Brace yourself to form your own relation with Yisrael!

Israeli Movie Night

Kedma

On Sunday, March 14 at 7 P.M. in the Temple social hall, we are showing our first adult Jewish film. The Israeli film, KEDMA, is a 100 minutes drama about a group of European Jewish refugees who arrive at Palestine in the critical year of 1948. Carried on the deck of the freighter Kedma, they come ashore to find not the Promised Land of milk and honey, but a war-torn desert in the bloody throes of transformation into the state of Israel. Rescued from a British army ambush at beachside by Palmach Jewish guerillas, the Kedma's ragged refugees are remade into soldiers expected to offer their lives to defend a nation that does not yet exist in a land they've never known. Directed by Amos Gitai and released in 2002.

Those in attendance will be asked if they wish to continue this---and if so, which others they would like to see.

Book Discussion Group

The next Book Discussion Group will meet on Sunday, April 18, at 7 PM. Mitch & Simone Fromm have generously offered to host this again at their Hudson home located at 122 N. Hayden Parkway. We shall be discussing Dara Horn's novel, ALL OTHER NIGHTS. It is a gripping epic about Jewish life and moral struggles of the Civil War. To give the Fromm's some idea of how many will attend, please email me at tchandle@kent.edu or phone: (330) 342-9300.
