Letter from Rabbi Ross

Dear TBS Friends & Family,

This Friday is Rosh Hashanah!
We are so excited to start the new year together.
Our theme this year is “Building Resilience.”
The text we will study together about this comes from the end of the Torah Service, when we place the
Torah back in the Ark, called “Eitz Chaim Hee”:

For I have given you excellent instruction; do not abandon My Torah.
It is a tree of life to those who cling to it, and those who support it are happy.
Its paths are paths of pleasantness, and all of its ways lead to peace.
Take us back O Lord; let us come back. Renew our days as of old.

In this season of returning, and season of holiness, how can we invite the Torah and Jewsih life into our own lives?

We will begin this journey with our thoughts around the 9/11 anniversary.
Here are three questions for each of you to consider:
– What was my life like on 9/10, 25 years ago?
– What was my experience of 9/11?
– How did my life change on 9/12?

May we be transformed, renewed, and reinvigorated as we are inscribed in the Book of Life!
Shanah tovah!

Last Saturday’s Taste of Teshuvah program and the Selichot service were a wonderful experience! About 25 TBS members and friends gathered to socialize and enjoy Israeli wines and local honey. Thank you to Jennifer Frankino, who spoke about wines and offered advice about tastings and Dina Shimandle, a local vendor, who offered fascinating information about bees and local honey. Rabbi Michael led us through some reflective practices and the beautiful evening ended with a short Selichot service with the choir. Thank you to Rabbi Michael, Deb Rogers, Kim Strausser, Mike Miller, Laurie Frankino, Jennifer, Dina and everyone who stepped in to make the program a success.

For those interested in buying local honey from Dina’s company, Aurora Springs Honey, her website is https://www.auroraspringshoney.com

Dear TBS Congregants and Guests,

Did you know that there are approximately 79,480 food insecure people and 23,480 food insecure children living in Summit County?

Our temple has a long tradition of gathering food during the High Holy Days and this year is no exception.  Donating food is a way for us to make the world a better place- Tikkun Olam. The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is the recipient of our collection, and they are very grateful.  During the COVID pandemic, we made the decision to only accept monetary donations. This has made the choice to donate simpler, and we have decided to continue this practice.

If you wish to give a monetary donation, please scan the QR code with your phone’s camera to donate or visit http://give.akroncantonfoodbank.org/TempleBethShalom

Checks are also welcomed by the Foodbank. Please address your check to Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and write “Temple Beth Shalom High Holiday Food Drive” in the memo so we can track our donations. Then, mail your donation to the following address during either Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur:

Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank
350 Opportunity Parkway
Akron, OH 44307

Each $1 you donate provides 3 meals.

Your support of the Foodbank and local hunger-relief efforts could mean the difference for our neighbors in need. When every $1 donated helps provide the equivalent of 3 meals, your support can make a significant difference. In 2025, Temple Beth Shalom donated $2,822 = 8,466 meals (last year, $1=3 meals).

Thank you for your support with this important project.

L’shana tova,

Marcy Caplin
Holiday Food Drive Chair

TBSSisterhood
meetings/events

• If you enjoy the sisterhood get togethers, that is awesome! We have a fun group, and I am hoping to see it grow. Now is a good time to renew your membership and there are options for doing so. At the bottom there will be a QR code to do so, or a link to print the paper renewal.  Dues can be mailed to Robin Rosen-Sharp at 7440 Sylvan Drive, Kent, Ohio 44240. You can also pay dues at our next dinner or event.

If you are not a member yet, please check us out. We do dinners out, various other activities, fundraisers, and much laughing.  Whether you come to meetings, attend programs, help us organize and plan events, or just contribute dues, you are choosing to support Sisterhood and all we do.

A portion of our dues goes to Women of Reform Judaism in North America and WRJ Central District.  You are not only supporting the women and families of our temple, but also on a North American and Global level WRJ provides grants to fund clergy education, support our youth through NFTY and URJ camps, do advocacy work, and pay for a Legislative Assistant from the Religious Action Center. Through our affiliation with WRJ and our District we have the benefit of leadership training and education, the WRJ Speakers Bureau, and a District newsletter.  Some of the topics we can learn about are marketing, membership, programming, fundraising, and how to write a Shabbat service. For our congregation Sisterhood helps to support our Religious School, fundraising, Sisterhood services, and a Sisterhood oneg.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me.

TBS presents a fall bike ride open to all members, October 3rd. There are two options for our ride. Ride as much or as little as you like. Time and final starting point will be sent out about a week before depending on weather, but probably around 10:00 AM. Please RSVP me and don’t forget to give me a selection for the starting point. The route with the most affirmative votes will be our selected trail.

1) The tow path trail from Boston Mills north (due to the closure we cannot go south). You can do as much or as little as you want; for the more adventurous you can go all the way to Wendy Park. It is mostly all flat, (mostly) till you get to Canal and route 17.
2) The Summit Metro Parks hike and bike trail from route 303. There are a few hills. but
it also is nice. You can go either way, to Brandywine or South.

So far, it is Wendy Hess, me (Aviva). and the Rabbi.

Please contact me with any questions. You may RSVP and state your preferred route to
redtailskv@mac com
