Dear TBS Parents and Friends,

This year, Temple Beth Shalom Religious School will again provide Jewish education to our children, ages toddler through twelfth grade. We are looking forward to another year of learning, discovering, and growing together as a Jewish community!

Class Schedules and Teachers

The first day of school for all students is Sunday, August 28. The schedule of courses is as follows:

  • TBS Tots, for ages 0-5 with a caregiver, meets on selected Sundays from 10:30-12 with Ms. Shari Weiner

    • Grades K-1 with Morah Jean Beasley
    • Grades 2-3 with Morah Madison Kalson
    • Grades 4-5 with Morah Abby Cymerman
    • Grades 6-7 (pre-B’nai Mitzvah) with Moreh Oudi Singer

We are pleased to announce that this year our students will have the opportunity to learn through the arts in a new way: in addition to music classes with Cantorial Soloist Robin Selinger, we will also be offering Israeli dance classes with KSU Professor of Dance Jeffrey Rockland. Robin and Jeff will be alternating Sundays throughout the year.

The full school schedule is attached, and is also available on our website at If you use iCal, you can subscribe to the TBS calendar at

We are going to use Google Forms for online registration again this year. Please use this
link to register:

If you prefer paper registration forms, they are available for download here:

Whether you register on paper or online, please complete the payment form to calculate your total fees and either use our online payment center at to pay with your credit card/PayPal account or mail the form to Temple Beth Shalom Religious School, PO Box 2230, Hudson, Ohio 44236 with your check (payable to Temple Beth Shalom). The registration fee of $30 per family is waived if tuition is paid in full by September 1, 2016.

Our fees have not increased for this year. They remain $550 per child for Sunday School, $200 additional for Thursday Hebrew, and $250 for Post-B’nai Mitzvah classes. We strive to take advantage of available grants and other programs to keep our fees low while still providing a rich educational environment for our students. If you cannot afford tuition, please contact me for confidential financial arrangements.

HuBSTY/NFTY Youth Groups

Once again, we will be offering a NFTY-affiliated youth program for students in middle and high school, under the direction of Marc Folkman, TBS Youth Advisor. HuBSTY-JYG is for students in grades 6-8, and HuBSTY-TYG is for grades 9-12. HuBSTY dues are included in TBS Religious School fees. Teens who wish to join HuBSTY but are not registered in TBS Religious School will be asked to pay dues of $36. All Jewish teens are welcome: you do not have to be a member of TBS to join HuBSTY. For more information, contact Marc at

High School Programs

Students in grades 8-9 (and 7th graders who have already celebrated their B’nai Mitzvah) are encouraged to register for the twice-monthly “Gesher” class, taught by Moreh Oudi (with special guests) in a Lunch & Learn format.

Beginning after the High Holy Days, with a kickoff informational meeting and potluck dinner on Friday, November 4, students in grades 10-12 are invited to join Rabbi Jim for Confirmation classes on selected Sundays from 10:30-11:30AM.

Additionally, high school students who are interested in working with our younger students can register for our Madrichim program, which will incorporate volunteer opportunities with leadership training. Registered madrichim will also have the opportunity to serve as paid aides for retreats and special programs.

Pre-School Programs

In addition to our TBS Tots class, TBS offers two other programs for families with young children. “Tot Shabbat” is held prior to the first Shabbat service of each month, and is a brief, fun, interactive service targeted at children ages 6 and younger, followed by a kidfriendly oneg. This year, Tot Shabbat is moving to an earlier time (6:30PM), and will be part of our “Family First Fridays” programming, which will include Religious School class potluck dinners and student-participation services.

“TBS Tots Around Town” is a playgroup-style program for families with children ages 5 and younger which meets in various locations around Hudson and its environs. Families do not have to be members of Temple Beth Shalom to participate in Tot Shabbat or TBS Tots Around Town, and there is no fee for these programs. Please check the TBS calendar for event dates.

Learning Council and Volunteers

We love volunteers! Parents are welcome to help in our school at any time, whether with special projects or with general classroom activities. If you have a particular interest which you would like to share with our school, please let me know.

Last year, Temple Beth Shalom founded a new Learning Council. This initiative brings together parents, teachers, teens, adult learners, and other members of the congregation who are interested in our educational programming. Parents are very welcome to join this group, and/or the Religious School subcommittee which will be forming soon.

New Families Welcome

Please share this information regarding TBS Religious School with your family and friends who may be interested in enrolling their children in our program. We would like to extend a particular welcome to unaffiliated families of young children. Families may enroll students in our Sunday School (grades Pre-K – 2) for one year before becoming members of Temple Beth Shalom.

Your prompt registration and payment are greatly appreciated. If you have questions about Religious School, or would like to join the TBS Learning Council, please contact me at or 330-752-3349.

See you on August 28!
