Dear TBS Parents and Friends,
This fall, Temple Beth Shalom Religious School will again provide Jewish education to our children, ages preschool through twelfth grade.
In response to last year’s parent survey, we have made changes in all grade levels of our school for this year. We have restructured how grades are grouped, and will be welcoming some new faculty. Please pay careful attention to the following information.
Class Schedules and Teachers
The first day of school is Sunday, September 7 (except Pre-K, which begins on September 21). The schedule of courses is as follows:
- Pre-K meets on selected Sundays from 10:30-12 with Ms. Shari
- Grades K-7 meet on Sundays from 9-12. Parents are encouraged to join us for T’fillah from 11:30-12:00 each week.
- Grades K-1 with Ms. Jean
- Grades 2-3 with Ms. Madison
- Grades 4-5 with Morah Abby
- Grades 6-7 (pre-B’nai Mitzvah) with Moreh Oudi
- Grades 3-7 also meet on Thursdays from 4:30-6:00 (optional for Grade 3)
- Grades 8-12 meet on selected Sundays from 12-2 with Moreh Oudi, Morah Stefani, and Rabbi Jim
The full school schedule is attached, and is also available on our website at http://tbshudson.org/calendar/.
We are going to use Google Forms for online registration again this year.
Please use this link to register: http://tinyurl.com/n5crpdy
If you prefer printable paper registration forms, they are available for download here:
Whether you register on paper or online, please complete the payment form and mail it to Temple Beth Shalom Religious School, PO Box 2230, Hudson, Ohio 44236 with the appropriate fees (please make checks payable to Temple Beth Shalom). The registration fee of $30 per family is waived if tuition is paid in full by September 1, 2014.
Our fees have not increased for this year. We strive to take advantage of available grants and other programs to keep our fees low while still providing a rich educational environment for our students. If you cannot afford tuition, please contact me for confidential financial arrangements.
Save the Date: Congregational Family Retreat
One very exciting new program which we will be offering this year is an overnight congregational family education retreat. This inter-generational learning opportunity for students ages 1-101 will take place Saturday, January 17 - Sunday, January 18, 2015 (MLK weekend) at Quail Hollow Resort in Painesville, and will be centered around the theme of “Shabbat Tzedek: Reform Judaism’s Role in the American Civil Rights Movement.” More information, and registration instructions, will follow later this fall.
HuBSTY/NFTY Youth Groups
Once again, we will be offering a NFTY-affiliated youth program for students in grades 6+, under the direction of Youth Advisor Oudi Singer. HuBSTY-JYG is for students in grades 6-8, and HuBSTY-TYG is for grades 9-12. NFTY dues are included in the registration fees for the Post B’nai Mitzvah class. Teens who wish to join HuBSTY but are not registered in TBS Religious School can pay dues of $36 at their first meeting. All Jewish teens are welcome: you do not have to be a member of TBS to join HuBSTY.
High School Programs
Students in grades 9-12 are encouraged to register for the Post B’nai Mitzvah “Lunch & Learn” class, during which they will be working with Rabbi Jim to devise a confirmation class program (which will meet such times/days as are mutually agreed). Additionally, high school students who are interested in working with our younger students can register for our Madrichim program, which will incorporate volunteer opportunities with leadership training. Registered madrichim will also have the opportunity to serve as paid aides for retreats and special programs.
In addition to our Parent-Child Pre-K class, TBS offers two other programs for families with young children. “Tot Shabbat” is held prior to the first Shabbat service of each month (usually the second Friday), and is a brief, fun, interactive service targeted at children ages 6 and younger, followed by a kid-friendly oneg. “TBS Tots Around Town” is a playgroup-style program for families with children ages 5 and younger which meets in various locations around Hudson and its environs. Families do not have to be members of Temple Beth Shalom to participate in Tot Shabbat or TBS Tots Around Town, and there is no fee for these programs. Please check the TBS calendar for event dates.
Room Parents and Volunteers
We love volunteers! Parents are welcome to help in our school at any time, whether with special projects or with general classroom activities. If you have a particular interest which you would like to share with our school, please let me know.
This year, our goal is for each class to have a designated Room Parent. The responsibilities of the room parent are threefold: to serve as that class’s representative to Religious School Committee meetings (to be held during Sunday School hours); to organize the class Shabbat potluck; and to work with the classroom teacher to coordinate the class’s designated school-wide holiday celebration.
Please share this information regarding TBS Religious School with your family and friends who may be interested in enrolling their children in our program. We would like to extend a particular welcome to unaffiliated families of young children. Families may enroll students in our Sunday School (grades Pre-K - 2) for one year before becoming members of Temple Beth Shalom.
