Letter from Rabbi Ross
Rabbi Michael Ross
Dear TBS Friends and Family,

This Saturday, 10/28, we finally are starting our new round of Prayer Lab classes. We will take time each session to check in about the events in Israel and Gaza. I have found great comfort in being in community during the first few weeks of this nightmare. We invite all who seek community to join us for either our discussion hour, or our prayer service hour, or both. Being in community now can be so meaningful.

Let me share two positive perspectives from Israelis I am encountering recently. After 10 months of massive protests, the protest organizers are using their communication lists and organizing strategies to refocus Israeli society on unifying and preparing for a long war. Volunteers are gathering needed supplies and routing them as needed. Restaurants are “kashering” their kitchens and preparing meals for the military. Neighbors are turning to each other for help with child care, or housing needs. Israelis are feeling connected and supported by this instant pivot. This is the first time in Israel’s history where it’s losses were primarily felt by the civilian population. Israelis are also feeling tremendous support from the words and actions of President Biden. They are heartened by his continuous acts of support.

We pray for the return of the hostages. We pray for peace.

NEW CLASS STARTING – Prayer Lab’s “Making Prayer Real”
Last year in the Prayer Lab our Saturday morning group explored the structure of the prayer service and learned some of the metaphors that appear in the prayers. This year, we will explore the art of Jewish prayer, and explore the stumbling blocks that might get in the way of having a meaningful prayer life.
We will read through a wonderful book, by Rabbi Mike Comins with the same name, “Making Prayer Real.” Each week we will read through a short section of the book together.

I am asking everyone to purchase the book at Amazon or Barnes and Noble. (I will provide handouts the first week or two as folks order this paperback book.)

Our first session of this new series of classes will be Sat. 10/28 at 9:30. Our second session will be Sat. 11/11.
Chuck Fink will join us once a month to bring additional musicality to our setting.

Prayer Lab’s Saturday Schedule
– 9:15 – 9:30: Coffee, bagels, schmoozing
– 9:30 – 10:30: Check in about the week and discussion of this week’s chapter
– 10:30 – 11:30: Shabbat Morning Prayer Service (led by Rabbi Ross and once a month with  Chuck Fink)
