Issue #644
Letter from Rabbi Ross
Dear TBS Friends and Family,
Let go of the week and welcome in the peace of Shabbat this Friday! Chuck Fink and I will co-lead our Shabbat B’yachad service this week at 7:30.
I am overjoyed to announce that Ditza Heiman, the Israeli grandmother I spoke about at the start of the war, was released on Wednesday! Her family in Philadelphia thanks everyone for holding Ditza in their thoughts and prayers for 7 weeks. It helped alleviate their pain. We demand the release of the rest of the hostages as soon as possible.
Donations to support Israel can be made at Cleveland Federation:

Update on Security at Temple Beth Shalom
from Co-President James Field
As with all Jewish institutions, security has always been top of mind. However, security has been an even greater focus for all of us since the events of Oct 7. I have listed below measures we have taken and new developments.
- We have had armed security personal from the JFC Security, LLC, an affiliate of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and from the Hudson Police Department for Shabbat services and for major events and holidays. They have also provided security assessments and advice for grants for security investments.
- We have given the times for all of our services, events, and education classes to the Hudson Police Department (whose headquarters is 0.4 miles or 2 minutes by car/7 minutes walking from Temple Beth Shalom). They are scheduling drive-bys during those hours.
- We have installed Ring cameras at the front and side doors with continuously recorded surveillance and alerts to key members.
- We have a panic button in the Oneg room (downstairs) with direct connection to the Hudson Police Department.
- We have had intruder training by the Hudson Police Department.
- We have changed practices by keeping the front doors closed once services start and by making sure that only members and guests attend services.
- Thanks to the support of Wendy Hess, we have a Federal Security Grant for $13,000 that will provide the following upgrades (installation can start once we get final FEMA approval):
- New Secure Exterior Entrance Door
- Shatter resistant film for ground floor windows
- Bearacades™ for interior door security
- We have applied for a $100,000 grant from the State of Ohio that would provide indoor and outdoor camera systems along with alarms that will be tied into the JFC Security support.
We ask that all congregants be security conscience. Please do not leave the front or back doors propped open and untended. At Temple events please let the Co-Presidents, Rabbi or whoever is running the event know if you see unusual activity or persons who do not appear to be affiliated with the Temple. Always be aware of the location of the nearest exits (this is important in case of a fire as well). We are open to suggestions for security improvements, but we hope that the suggestion comes with an offer of assistance if it requires volunteer hours and/or funding.
