Letter from Rabbi Ross
Rabbi Michael Ross
Dear TBS Friends and Family,

On Tuesday, my family and I joined 2 Akron-area buses and 24 Cleveland-area buses as we gathered on the mall at D.C. for the Rally for Israel. (Cleveland Federation had the largest group of folks, nearly 2,000!) The crowd was estimated to be 290,000 people (based on metal detector counts.)

For one day, we were surrounded by other Jews and allies. We were there to support Israel, to support the release of the hostages, to decry the increase of anti semitic speech and gestures. American Jews had not had this type of collective rally since the ’80s when we came together to support Soviet Jewry.

We heard from Israel’s President, by video, Isaac Herzog. We heard from leaders of the House and a few celebrities. It was a joy to come together, but it was overshadowed by the terrible reality that we had all suffered so much pain, anxiety, and fear in the past 6 weeks. We held the joy and the pain side-by-side.

It was a transformational experience that my son and my college students will remember for the rest of their lives. When Israel was attacked by its worst violent outbreak since the Holocaust, we came together seeking solace and support.

I am still processing all of these experiences, but one early thought has been upon my heart this week. Rami Feinstein, the Israel fellow in Akron held up a touching sign: Libi bemizrach – my heart is in the East. For me, I know my heart has been in the East, and my connection to my Israeli family and friends has grown dramatically stronger.

I encourage all of us to come together this Sunday for our annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service at Christ Church Episcopal at 7:00 p.m. It has been so nourishing to come together in community recently.

Donations to support Israel can be made at Cleveland Federation:

NEW CLASS STARTING – Prayer Lab’s “Making Prayer Real”

Last year in the Prayer Lab our Saturday morning group explored the structure of the prayer service and learned some of the metaphors that appear in the prayers. This year, we will explore the art of Jewish prayer, and explore the stumbling blocks that might get in the way of having a meaningful prayer life.

We will read through a wonderful book, by Rabbi Mike Comins with the same name, “Making Prayer Real.” Each week we will read through a short section of the book together.

I am asking everyone to purchase the book at Amazon or Barnes and Noble. (I will provide handouts the first week or two as folks order this paperback book.)

Here’s the link:

Our third session will be Sat. 12/9. Each class is independent and can be studied on its own. All are welcome!

Prayer Lab’s Saturday Schedule
– 9:15 – 9:30: Coffee, bagels, schmoozing
– 9:30 – 10:30: Check in about the week and discussion of this week’s chapter
– 10:30 – 11:30: Shabbat Morning Prayer Service
(led by Rabbi Ross and once a month with Chuck Fink)
