Letter from Rabbi Ross
Dear TBS Friends and Family,
Last Friday night, TBS hosted 25 international interfaith leaders from a State Department sponsored visit. They came to our community for a workshop, dinner and Sukkot Service. This photo was from that event. The joy of the holiday and the joy of hosting the guests was precious.
And before we woke up the next morning, the Jewish world was rocked by the heinous acts of violence. Rape, murder, kidnap, torture, massacres.
We are devastated and broken-hearted over the terrible attacks by Hamas over the weekend. In our pain and our desire to come together in community we are planning an “Israel Shabbat” this Saturday morning.
At 9:30, we will meet in the Social Hall to share reflections about the week.
At 10:00, we will move to the sanctuary and have a special Shabbat Service with special prayers and poetry to honor the wounded and the dead.
There has been a strong show of support from our interfaith friends this week. We .are welcoming interfaith neighbors to join as to support our community.
Please take time to get beyond the news to connect to community. Please take time to exercise or practice important self care. The stress and emotions of this week can easily overwhelm us. I sobbed Wednesday as I drove to work listening to Israeli voices describing the shock and the horror. Feel the pain, and then find time to regroup. My bike rides this week are as important as they have ever been.
My hope this week is that image of our Sukkot gathering with our new interfaith acquaintances. Our guests were Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, Christian and Jewish. May we find ways to bring more light into the world.

Religious School Update
This Sunday, 10/15, we will have our first full day of religious school classes since August.
TORAH STUDY & BAGEL BRUNCH at Kent State Hillel
Sat. 10/21 is Homecoming at Kent State. Hillel will be hosting an open house, and I will be leading a special Torah Study about Noah, 10-12:00 pm. Bagel brunch will be served! All TBS folks are warmly welcomed to come on this fun field trip to campus.
NEW CLASS STARTING – Prayer Lab’s “Making Prayer Real”
Last year in the Prayer Lab our Saturday morning group explored the structure of the prayer service and learned some of the metaphors that appear in the prayers. This year, we will explore the art of Jewish prayer, and explore the stumbling blocks that might get in the way of having a meaningful prayer life.
We will read through a wonderful book, by Rabbi Mike Comins with the same name, “Making Prayer Real.” Each week we will read through a short section of the book together.
I am asking everyone to purchase the book at Amazon or Barnes and Noble. (I will provide handouts the first week or two as folks order this paperback book.)

We had originally planned to hold a Prayer Lab session this Saturday to kick-off a new year of learning. We will postpone that session two weeks to Sat. 10/28 at 9:30.
