Letter from Rabbi Ross
Rabbi Michael Ross
Dear TBS Friends and Family,

First, a huge thank you to Laurie Frankino, the Brotherhood chefs and those who brought yummy desserts for our wildly successful Cookout and Outdoor Service last Friday evening. The turnout,
on a holiday weekend, was sensational! It was a huge joy and blessing to formally welcome Deb Rogers as our new cantorial soloist.

And just a day, last Saturday evening, the Jewish community received the shattering news that Hersch Goldberg-Polin and five other hostages were executed by Hamas, leaving us devastated. The Jewish obligation
or mitzvah of redeeming the captives above and beyond nearly everything else has been primary for many of us. The Israeli government also holds culpability for not prioritizing
the hostages return over their military and political ambitions.
Three of the hostages who died last week, including Hersch, were on the list of hostages
who were set to be released when a ceasefire agreement is made.

The courage of Hersch’s parents, Rachel and Jon Goldberg-Polin, to speak out so directly, forcefully, and unceasingly has been a prophetic call for many of us to listen to. To hold
their pain and anguish this week feels unbearable, as if this is another type of shiva
experience. Hersch was born in California. He and his family made aliyah when he was young. He was a camper and counselor at Camp Ramah Darom in Georgia. May his memory be a blessing.

This Saturday is our next Torah For Our Times session at 9:30. We will also take some time to begin our High Holiday Journal writing.
This Sunday is First Serve. I will be presenting at the Sendoff Service at 8:30 am before the projects begin. I will speak of our brokenness.

Sunday is also Super Sunday, the kickoff for Cleveland Federation’s annual fundraising campaign. TBS receives more than $45,000 in grants every year to support our Religious School, our toddlers, and our community. Additionally, more than a third of Kent State Hillel’s budget comes from these grants. Please give generously!
